In our view, there are few experiences more humbling than being out in the bush at night and hearing a lion roar. It reminds us of what?s important, and of what?s not important at all. It reminds us why we do what we do. We hope we can share this experience with you sometime soon at our lodges. The Amakhala?s alpha male lion, a hulking 210kg male in his prime, can put out a roar that can be heard up to 9km away. Reaching as much as 114 decibels, this roar strengthens the bonds between the members of the pride, and announces his claim to the territory he lives on. At seven years old, the alpha male is also in his prime years for breeding. The last litter born on the Amakhala produced three cubs, all of which flourished. Last year, the cubs were old enough to be moved off to establish their own territories. This was a significant milestone in our journey with this family of lions. We?re proud and privileged to be part of this ongoing work to ensure the successful survival of these cats on our reserve and throughout Southern Africa.
