Welcome to Destination Africa’s November/December tourist newsletter.

Welcome to yet another informative tourist newsletter. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our tourist subscribers and our clients listed on our site a happy and peaceful festive season. MPUMALANGA Mpumalanga means "place of the rising sun", previously known as the Eastern Transvaal and often referred to as “Big Game Country” It is the setting for dozens of sanctuaries with birds and wildlife. There are several private reserves including the world renowned Kruger National Park where one can see the famous “big five” lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The Eastern Transvaal boasts with its many splendid panoramic views.
PILGRIMS REST Take a step back in time; this small village dates back to 1873 with the discovery of gold by a miner, Alec Patterson, known to many as “Wheelbarrow”	This beautiful valley drew optimistic gold panners and prospectors from all over the world. On 22nd September 1873 Pilgrim's Rest was officially proclaimed a gold field. By 1875 there were 21 stores, 18 canteens and 3 bakeries. A reef was found in the 1890s from which gold was produced until 1972. Today, Pilgrim's Rest is a living museum. The whole town was declared a museum and all the buildings restored to its former glory One of the few examples in the world of a town reflecting the style of those built during the gold rushes of the 1800s.
Climate: Mpumalanga receives most of its rainfall in the summer months between November and February. The western region of this province is much hotter and colder than the other regions. Closer to the Kruger National Park, conditions are mild to hot subtropical. Average summer daytime temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius and winter average daytime temperatures around 14 degrees Celsius
Places of interest and activities
The most spectacular stretch of the Panorama Route is the Blyde River Canyon situated approximately 8km north of Graskop. The Blyde River Canyon is the biggest vegetated canyon in the world. Second in size only to the Grand Canyon in the USA, and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, it is green and lush with plant life.	From many well-positioned vantage points one has a view of the 33 km long gorge, which starts at "Bourke's Luck Potholes" The Potholes are very impressive rock formations that were shaped millions of years ago by erosion. The bizarre swirl holes developed when the once rapid river carried masses of sand and debris.
At God's Window on the Drakensberg escarpment, majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters to the Lowveld and the private game reserves which have made the area one of Africa's prime wildlife destinations. God's Window is a small part of a 250km long rampart of sheer cliffs - it indeed seems as if one can see forever! With its magnificent views, rock formations, canyons and waterfalls, God's Window is truly an area of breathtaking scenic grandeur.
The Panorama Route offers something for everyone. Nature enthusiasts will discover many cascading water falls

While adrenaline junkies can get their next rush by bungee jumping, white water rafting or going on rigorous 4x4 trails, or more relaxed hot air ballooning, walking trails and gold panning.

Pietermaritzburg Pietermaritzburg is the capital and second largest city of the province of KwaZulu-Natal. It was founded in 1838. The city was originally founded by the Voortrekkers, following the defeat of Dingane at the Battle of Blood River.
The city boasts with 39 historic (national) momuments.	This magnificent example of Victorian architecture is the largest red-brick building in the Southern Hemisphere. On June 6, 1969, the Pietermaritzburg City Hall was declared a National Monument. It is notable for its fine stained-glass windows and domes.

This historical monument at the top end of Church Street is now part of the Natal College of Education. This was the home of the Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, Benjamin Pine, who arrived in Natal in 1851. The building was completed in the late 1860’s and the Natal Government later bought it from Pine and established it as Government House.

Climate:
Enjoying one of the best climates in the world, Pietermaritzburg experiences clear blue skies and warm weather virtually all year. Temperature in summer range from 16 degrees - 32 degrees Celsius, and in winter -2 degrees to 22 degrees Celsius. Rainfall mostly in the summer months

Location:
Pietermaritzburg is centrally situated between Durban, the Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal's game reserves on the main N3 highway between Johannesburg and Durban; Pietermaritzburg is approximately 80km north of Durban by road. It is approximately 550km from Pietermaritzburg to Johannesburg and 1590km to Cape Town.

Places of interest and activities:
Dusi Canoe Marathon starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban, scheduled for 15,16,17 January 2009 (dates could change). The race is currently held over a period of three days, with each day having a defined beginning and end. The race is referred to as the Hansa Powerade Dusi, after the two principal sponsors Hansa and Powerade.

	The first day is 45 km which includes roughly 15 km of portaging with the canoe, with shorter portaging sections on day 2 and 3. Day 2 is also 45 km and ends with a 10 km stretch on flat water on the Inanda Dam. Day 3 is 35km of clean cold water let out from the dam. There are several sections with large rapids, particularly on day 2 and 3.
	Comrades marathon house the headquarters of this road race. The oldest and largest ultramarathon, the 89km Comrades Marathon first took place in 1921 and has been run every year since, except from 1941 to 1945 when it was stopped during the Second World War. The race is run between Pietermaritzubrg and Durban. Direction alternates each year. Next race is scheduled for 24 June 2009 to start at the city hall in Pietermaritzburg at 5.30 am and will end in Durban.

Plettenberg Bay known as the jewel of the Garden Route. In 1487, Portugese explorers chartered the bay, followed 90 years later by Manuel da Perestrello, who aptly called it Bahia Formosa or the Bay Beautiful. Later it was named Plettenberg Bay after the governor Joachim von Plettenberg.

Plettenberg Bay is one of the beautiful stops on the famous Garden Route in South Africa. It is renowned for its endless, white beaches, beautiful lagoon and river mouth, whale watching, nature reserve, pansy shells and night life. This is what makes it a popular holiday resort for locals and foreigners alike.

Guided ferry trips up the Keurbooms River and view the spectacular forests from the comfort of the ferry.

The Robberg Peninsula is a nature reserve and national monument that lies about 8km south of Plettenberg Bay, 2 or 4 hour walks on this 350 million year old Robberg. It presents a fine example of how plants and animals adapt to the interacting influences of land and sea.

Bloukrans is the World’s Highest Commercial Bungy Jump at a whooping 216m high, the ultimate thrill, or for the less intimidating cable slide, as well as an exhilarating bridge walk are also offered.

Take a elephant ride

Monkeyland is unique in that the sanctuary caters for several species of primate, and they are not caged, they are free to move about the forest, and do so in harmony.

There are many more activities in the area, from abseiling, scuba diving and snorkeling, day excursions to game reserves, gliding, golf, bird watching End your day with sundowners at the famous Beacon Isle Hotel.

EASTERN CAPE

We have attended a few successful workshops with Lynn from Travel People and for next year’s overseas marketing is still in the planning process. For the New Year our second National Run Walk for Life, Half marathon (which is at De Zeekoe) will be held on the 20th Jan ’09. Our School project is in working progress. The new land from the Zeekoegat has been donated which gives us the right to start with the building process.
