Margate Information

Margate, located on the sparkling south coast of Kwa Zulu Natal is a popular holiday destination. Margate has beautiful beaches with Blue Flag status. With an abundance of coral reefs and a multitude of tropical fish species, scuba diving and snorkeling are a favourite pastime. Protea Banks dive site is a must for divers. The annual sardine run brings the coastline to life when these tiny silver fish attract numerous larger game fish, dolphins and a variety of birdlife. Margate offers watersports such as boating, skiing and surfing. Canoes and paddle boats are available for hire at the lagoon.

Nature Lovers can visit the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve offering spectacular views and a wide variety of animal species. Skyline Reserve and Uvongo River Reserve are also in close proximity.

Margate Bird Park is a walk through aviary delighting all visitors. The park also has a playground and tea garden. For the slightly more adventurous a visit to Riverbend Croc Farm wont disappoint.

Margate is the south coasts centre for night life. Pubs, discos and beach parties will entertain visitors into the wee hours of the morning.

Margate has a sub-tropical climate receiving it’s rainfall during the summer months from December to February. Average daytime temperatures range from 22”C in July to 26.6”C in February. More information

Protea Banks Dive Site

Come and experience the thrill of diving with wild sharks in their natural environment. We pioneered diving on Protea Banks and remain the premier dive operation in our region. Our attention to safety and the protection of the reef are top priorities. Without the use of any cages, small groups of divers are taken on a drift dive with sharks. More information

Riverbend Croc Farm

Home to more than 200 adult nile crocodiles and numerous juveniles of all sizes, tourist visiting Riverbend Crocodile Farm are able to view the crocodiles in their natural habitat. Old Macdonald’s Family Farm

Old Macdonald's Family Farm is a great place for the family. Spend the day on the banks of the Izotsha River fishing, grilling on the braai, relaxing, while the kids enjoy pony rides, tractor rides and feeding the farm animals and birds. Open daily in season from 9:30 am to 4 pm. Out of season on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and weekends.

 

Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve

One of KwaZulu-Natal's most spectacular natural settings, the scenic Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve is ideal for a weekend getaway or day-excursion, Oribi offers many delightful walks and self-guided trails to scenic spots in the reserve. More information

Uvongo River Nature Reserve

This small reserve protects the riparian strip on both sides of the Vungu River , just upstream of its mouth. The reserve is about 28ha in extent. Walking trails along the banks of the river provide visitors with the means to penetrate the lush riverine forest and gain access to numerous bird species. No special arrangements are necessary and the reserve may be visited at any time. More information
